“What worked well other places does not mean it will work here, so I am really listening and taking feedback. I am a strong believer in collaborating,” she said. Her first impression is that the community strongly supports the arts, which she’s encouraged to hear. “When you have a community that’s anchored with arts centers, galleries, theaters…museums, it creates an environment that draws people, and it improves the quality of life and revitalizes neighborhoods,” she said. Broadening the appeal Hindenach and Ramsamooj said Arts of the Albemarle is seeking to draw more people into events and programs than it has in the past. “There’s a lot of different outreach going on to try to engage not only our long-time supporters, who we are so very grateful for, but other members of the community who may be thinking there is no reason to step in our doors, or it’s not their cup of tea,…but once you make that connection, they feel ownership,” said Hindenach. At the same time, AoA is gaining support with nearly 500 members, more than Ramsamooj has seen since she’s been on the board. “That tells us we are doing something right I think,” said Ramsamooj. Money matters Hindenach said she’s a big believer in “sustainable programming” that can support itself and offer people what they want. “We don’t want to continually be asking for grants for the same thing over and over. We want to be able to develop a product (that sustains itself), so that we can come back and say, ‘hey, we have a new and different exciting idea now,'” she said.
